The position you pick at the start of a run is the closest thing Stat Thief has to a difficulty setting. It decides which players can appear, which attributes are worth stealing, and how forgiving a bad round is. This page gives you the exact numbers the game uses so you can stop guessing.
The weighting table
Each attribute contributes a fixed share of the final overall rating. The three columns below each add up to 100%.
| Attribute | Forward | Midfielder | Defender |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pace | 18% | 10% | 10% |
| Finishing / Shooting | 22% | 8% | 4% |
| Key Pass / Passing / Build-up | 8% | 22% | 10% |
| Dribbling / Technique / Awareness | 18% | 14% | 6% |
| Pressing / Tackling | 4% | 10% | 26% |
| Power / Stamina | 12% | 14% | 18% |
| Heading / Aerial | 10% | 6% | 16% |
| Composure / Vision / Leadership | 8% | 16% | 10% |
Forward
Top-heavy. The easiest position to spike, the easiest to ruin.
Finishing, pace and dribbling together carry 58% of a forward's rating. Three good steals in those three attributes and you are already most of the way to a high build; three mediocre ones and nothing you do in the remaining seven rounds can rescue the run. Pressing at 4% is effectively a dead column - if a striker's only good grade is a defensive one, that round is a respin candidate.
Forwards are also the position where the draw is kindest, because the pool is full of players whose reputation was built on exactly the attributes you need. Expect to see S grades early. Expect to be punished for taking the wrong ones.
Play it if you like a high ceiling and do not mind a run that is decided by round four.
Midfielder
The most balanced position, and the one that rewards understanding the system.
Passing is the single heaviest attribute at 22%, but nothing else is negligible: vision at 16%, stamina and technique at 14%, tackling at 10%. There is no throwaway column. That makes midfield the forgiving option - almost every player you draw will have something worth taking - but also the position with the flattest ceiling, because you rarely get to concentrate several steals into one dominant area.
Midfield is where playstyle traits pay off most reliably. A trait that adds to passing, vision and technique at once is touching 52% of your rating in a single steal, which no individual attribute can do.
Play it if you want consistent high-seventies and low-eighties builds and enjoy optimising rather than gambling.
Defender
Narrow, physical, and the most deterministic of the three.
Tackling alone is 26% - more than any attribute in any other position. Add power at 18% and aerial at 16% and you have 60% of a defender's rating sitting in three attributes that tend to appear together on the same kind of player. That concentration means a defender build comes together quickly and predictably. It also means the position punishes greed: shooting at 4% and awareness at 6% are traps that look tempting when an attacking full-back rolls with a shiny grade attached.
Defenders have the smallest eligible pool of the three positions, so you will see the same names recur across runs more often. Plan your respins accordingly - there is less to discover.
Play it if you want a build you can steer deliberately from round one, or if you are learning the weighting system and want feedback that is easy to read.
Which position scores highest?
All three can reach the top tier, but they get there differently. Forwards have the highest variance: the best forward runs beat the best runs of either other position, and the worst forward runs are the worst in the game. Defenders are the most reliable - the floor is high because the heavy attributes cluster. Midfielders sit in between and depend most on traits.
If your goal is simply to see the Legendary Icon tier once, forward with aggressive early respins is the fastest route. If your goal is to average well across ten runs, defender is.
One habit that works in every position
Write down - or just remember - your position's three heaviest attributes before you start spinning. Everything else is noise until those three are filled at A- or better. It sounds reductive, and it lifts a typical first-week rating by five to eight points.
